After I had stained the tops and three visible sides of each butcher block piece and let them dry for a day I sealed them with Aquaspar - a water-based varnish that is extremely water proof and durable. For coloring a water based dye stain is appropriate. I do not believe you can stain on it and have it be food safe and i wood get the sealant.
I used a little foam brush which worked really well and sanded with very fine sandpaper in between coats. The companies that make the butcherblock usually offer 2 products a penetrating oil and or a sealant. Gel stains are very thick and provide a striking color when cured.
Then let it sit and wipe off the excess. It is great for. This is the traditional butcher block treatment and is easily renewed from time to time.
To avoid those stripes from sinking in youll need to wipe them away with a rag almost immediately. Our local hardware stores sells butcher block in 4ft 6ft and 10 ft sections. Generally the harder more durable the finish the harder it is to repair eg if you try and patch polyurethane youll get witness lines.
